Rogers SmartStream

The Opportunity
Streaming services had fundamentally changed how people consumed television. Many customers no longer wanted the cost or commitment of a traditional cable subscription but still wanted easy access to both free and premium streaming content. Ignite SmartStream gave Rogers an opportunity to reach these customers with a low-cost, low-risk entertainment platform that worked without a cable subscription while also creating new opportunities to retain internet customers and reduce customer churn.

Discovery & Design
Customer support insights and retention data helped shape the business opportunity, while usage analytics informed how free and premium content should be organized and promoted. One of the most interesting discoveries was that customers placed far more value on free content than expected and were generally satisfied bringing their existing streaming subscriptions to the platform rather than purchasing additional services.
The design challenge was not simply presenting content, but creating a unified experience across multiple content providers with very different business models. Working within the same platform constraints as Ignite TV, the team focused on the areas under Rogers’ control—including information architecture, navigation, naming conventions, and visual design—to create an experience that felt simple, consistent, and unmistakably Rogers. The guiding principle was to make content easy to find and enjoy, regardless of where it originated, while ensuring the experience felt intuitive and free of surprises.

The Outcome
Ignite SmartStream provided customers with a simple way to access free streaming content and integrate their existing streaming services without requiring a cable subscription. For Rogers, the platform extended its relationship with internet-only customers, supported customer retention, and created new opportunities for content purchases while responding to changing viewing habits. Perhaps most importantly, it demonstrated that delivering customer value did not always depend on increasing monthly subscriptions, but on making entertainment easier to discover and enjoy.
